Footage tips

Best footage for Step Shutter

The plugin holds frames and smears motion. If nothing is moving, you will barely see a change.

Works great

  • Clear subject or camera motion (dancers, street crowds, cars)
  • Night lights and traffic trails
  • Handheld walk-and-talks and action
  • Music video moments with punchy movement
  • A moving camera with good contrast

Not recommended

  • Talking heads and interview locks
  • Footage that is already heavily motion blurred
  • Very shaky handheld where the smear just looks messy
  • Fast pans over fine detail or text (it can turn to mush)
Presets

Three starters. Then dial it in.

All three default to Trail Behind. The difference shows with motion, not stills. Save your own looks with My Presets.

Classic 8

Default stepped low-shutter look. About a 3-frame hold and 4-frame smear on a 24 fps timeline.

Print Rate 8 · Open Angle 480°

Slow Smear

Longer holds and a stickier, softer smear between prints.

Print Rate 6 · Open Angle 540°

Long Trail

Same cadence as Classic 8, roughly double the smear length.

Print Rate 8 · Open Angle 960°
My Presets

Save the whole setup. Reuse it.

Dial Classic 8, Slow Smear, or Long Trail — plus Print Rate, Open Angle, trail, decay, and mix — then save it. Built-in presets stay as shipped.

How it works

Drop on a node. Pick a preset. Shape the trail.

Camera-style Print Rate and Open Angle, plus Trail Behind / Ahead / Both, Trail Decay, and Mix. The plugin reads your timeline frame rate so the same settings scale across 24 / 30 / 60 fps. Clip length never changes.
