How to Shoot Cinematic Apple Log Video on iPhone Using Blackmagic Camera App (Complete Guide)
Share
If you own an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max or newer Pro model, your phone already has one of the most powerful video tools available today: Apple Log.
Most people never use it.
Apple Log unlocks professional dynamic range and colour flexibility that rivals dedicated cinema cameras. The footage looks flat at first – but that’s the point. It’s designed to be colour graded.
In this guide, I’ll show you:
-
What Apple Log actually is
-
Why you should use the free Blackmagic Camera app
-
My exact recommended Blackmagic settings
-
How to preview and bake LUTs in real time
-
How to get cinematic colour in one click
And if you want to skip the technical learning curve, I’ll also show you how to get professional results instantly.

What Is Apple Log?
Apple Log is a flat colour profile available on Pro iPhones.
It captures:
-
Higher dynamic range
-
More detail in highlights and shadows
-
More flexibility in colour grading
When you first record in Apple Log, the footage looks grey and low contrast. That’s normal. Log footage is meant to be colour graded.
Without grading, it looks unfinished.
With proper grading, it looks cinematic.
Why Use the Blackmagic Camera App?
While Apple Log can be enabled natively, the Blackmagic Camera app gives you full professional control.
It allows you to:
-
Shoot directly in Apple Log
-
Control shutter speed and ISO manually
-
Monitor histogram and exposure
-
Import custom LUTs
-
Preview cinematic colour live
-
Bake LUTs directly into footage while recording
Best part? It’s free.

My Blackmagic Camera Settings (Recommended)
I use Blackmagic Cam daily when shooting Apple Log. These are the settings that work for me.

How to Shoot Cinematic Apple Log (Step by Step)
Step 1 – Enable Apple Log
Inside Blackmagic Camera:
-
Go to Record
-
Set Color Space to Apple Log 2 (or Apple Log for older models) – HDR
Now your footage will appear flat. That’s correct.
Step 2 – Set Proper Exposure
For cinematic results:
-
Keep shutter speed roughly double your frame rate
-
24fps → 1/48 or 1/50
-
25fps → 1/50
-
-
Avoid clipping highlights
-
Use histogram to monitor exposure
Apple Log retains detail, but exposure still matters.
Step 3 – Import LUTs into Blackmagic
This is where the magic happens.
Inside Blackmagic:
-
Go to LUT Manager
-
Import your LUT file
-
Turn preview ON
Now you can see cinematic colour in real time while shooting.
This gives you confidence on set and saves hours in post.

Preview vs Bake In – What’s the Difference?
You have two options:
Option 1 – Preview Only (Recommended for Flexibility)
-
LUT is visible while shooting
-
Footage remains in Apple Log
-
You can change LUTs later
Best for professionals.
Option 2 – Record LUT to Clip (Bake In)
-
Footage is recorded with LUT applied
-
Cannot change colour later
-
Faster workflow
Best for creators who want ready-to-post content.
