Ypresets Color Lab Film Grain effect on a Paris shot in DaVinci Resolve, with Grain Amount and Grain Size sliders

Dehancer vs FilmConvert vs Color Lab: Which DaVinci Resolve Plugin Fits Your Footage?

Dehancer and FilmConvert are film emulation plugins: they model film stocks, grain and halation for a wide range of cameras. Ypresets Color Lab is a look plugin for DaVinci Resolve built around the Ypresets looks for iPhone Apple Log and DJI footage, with color controls and film effects on one node. If you want to recreate specific film stocks, pick a film emulation plugin. If you shoot iPhone or DJI and want a finished look fast in Resolve Free or Studio, Ypresets Color Lab is the simpler fit.

We make Color Lab, so we’ve kept this comparison to what each company says on its own website, checked on October 7, 2026. Features and prices change, so confirm the details on each product page before you buy.

What’s the quick answer?

  • Dehancer Pro is the deepest of the three for film science: 60+ film profiles, print films, grain, halation, bloom and film damage, according to Dehancer.
  • FilmConvert Nitrate builds its film stocks around camera packs, so you pick your camera make, model and picture profile first. It’s a one-time purchase.
  • Ypresets Color Lab is built for creators who shoot iPhone Apple Log, standard iPhone video or DJI Log footage. You choose a pack and a look, then refine it with sliders, film effects and saved looks. It works in DaVinci Resolve 20 or later, Free and Studio.
  • All three offer a free trial with a watermark.

What’s the difference between a film emulation plugin and a look plugin?

A film emulation plugin tries to recreate how a particular film stock, and often a print stock, renders color, contrast, grain and highlights. You usually tell it which camera and log profile you shot, then choose a stock and fine-tune many technical controls.

A look plugin starts from a set of finished looks. You choose the look that suits your shot, set its strength and adjust a few familiar controls. Color Lab is this kind of plugin. It doesn’t try to model film stocks. It gives you the Ypresets video looks plus film-inspired effects such as Film Grain and Halation.

Neither approach is better for everyone. It depends on whether you want deep film control or a fast, finished grade.

Dehancer Pro: what does it offer?

Dehancer describes Dehancer Pro for DaVinci Resolve as an OFX plugin for “complete film emulation with 60+ Film Profiles, Print Films, Grain, Halation, Bloom, Film Damage, Overscan, Lut Generator, Camera Profiles and advanced color pipelines (DWG, ACES, Cineon).” Its product page also lists 130+ camera log profiles, print films such as Kodak 2383 and Fujifilm 3513, film breath and gate weave, and a CMY color head.

  • Compatibility: macOS, Windows and Linux, with DaVinci Resolve 19 or newer listed on the product page.
  • Pricing model: available as part of Dehancer’s subscription plans or as a lifetime license.
  • Trial: Dehancer’s Resolve setup guide describes a free 2-week trial. Until you activate, a watermark is applied to the preview and the rendered footage, and the Lut Generator is disabled.

Good for: colorists and filmmakers who want to recreate specific film and print stocks with a lot of technical control. Consider: it has many controls to learn if you just want a quick look for social videos.

FilmConvert Nitrate: what does it offer?

FilmConvert says Nitrate’s film stock emulations adapt to your camera’s color science. You select your camera make, model and picture profile, and Nitrate shapes the stock around that camera pack. Its page also describes grain modeled for each color and exposure, with a grain response curve, a Halation feature, custom curves and LUT export.

  • Compatibility: plugins for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, After Effects and Final Cut Pro, according to FilmConvert’s download page. The Resolve requirements listed are Resolve 16 and later or Resolve 18 and later, depending on the build and operating system.
  • Pricing model: FilmConvert’s FAQ says Nitrate and Halation are one-time purchases with no subscription fees.
  • Licenses: each Nitrate license has three activation seats.
  • Trial: full access to the controls with no time limit, but footage stays watermarked until you activate a license.

Good for: editors who want camera-matched film stocks and work across more than one editing app. Consider: the camera packs are the heart of it, so check that your camera and profile are supported.

Ypresets Color Lab: what does it offer?

Color Lab is an OpenFX plugin for DaVinci Resolve with every Ypresets video look built in. You choose the pack for your footage, pick a look, set its Intensity and refine it. Everything happens on a single node.

  • Looks: 7 packs with 78 looks, for iPhone Apple Log (also used for Apple Log 2), standard iPhone video, DJI drones in D-Log or D-Log M, and Osmo cameras in D-Log M, D-Log or D-Log 2. Choose the pack that matches the profile you shot.
  • Color controls: Exposure, Temperature, Tint, Highlights, Shadows, Contrast and Saturation, plus Highlight Roll-Off, Highlight Warmth, Protect Skin and Skin Warmth. In Resolve Studio, Auto Balance corrects exposure, white balance and black point in one click.
  • Film effects: Film Grain, Halation, Bloom and Vignette, plus adjustable cinematic Borders.
  • Compare and save: Before / After, Split Screen and My Looks for saving complete grades.
  • Compatibility: DaVinci Resolve 20 or later, Free and Studio, on Mac (Apple silicon and Intel) and Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • License: one-time purchase with free plugin updates. Your license key arrives by email and can be active on up to 2 computers at a time. Once activated, it works offline.
  • Trial: the full plugin, free, with a watermark until you activate a license.

Good for: creators who shoot iPhone or DJI footage, edit in Resolve and want a cinematic look in a few clicks. Consider: it only runs in DaVinci Resolve and doesn’t include the downloadable .cube files. If you edit in Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or CapCut desktop, the standalone .cube packs such as the iPhone Apple Log LUTs or Osmo Cinematic LUTs are the better choice.

Which one should you choose?

  • You want to recreate a specific film stock or print look: try Dehancer Pro or FilmConvert Nitrate. Both are built for that.
  • You work in several editing apps and want the same film look everywhere: FilmConvert lists plugins for Resolve, Premiere Pro, After Effects and Final Cut Pro.
  • You shoot iPhone Apple Log or DJI footage and edit in Resolve: Color Lab gets you to a finished look fastest, with grain and halation built in.
  • You’re on DaVinci Resolve Free: Color Lab works in Free and Studio. Check the other plugins’ system requirements for your setup.

You can also combine them. Color Lab works like a normal Resolve effect, so you can keep grading on other nodes in your own node tree.

Is Color Lab a Dehancer alternative?

It depends on why you looked at Dehancer. If you wanted a quick way to make iPhone or DJI footage look cinematic, with grain and halation, Color Lab covers that in a simpler interface and as a one-time purchase. If you wanted to match a particular film stock, Color Lab isn’t built for that, and a film emulation plugin is the better fit.

What about Resolve’s built-in Film Look Creator?

Blackmagic Design lists Film Look Creator among the extra Resolve FX in DaVinci Resolve Studio. It adds filmic color looks, film stocks, halation, grain, gate weave and split toning. If you already own Studio, try it before buying any plugin. For grain and halation in the free version, see our guide to film grain, halation and bloom in DaVinci Resolve Free.

FAQ

Do Dehancer and FilmConvert have free trials?

Yes. Dehancer’s setup guide describes a free 2-week trial that watermarks the preview and render until you activate. FilmConvert’s trial has full controls and no time limit, with a watermark until you activate a license.

Is there a free Dehancer alternative for DaVinci Resolve?

Resolve’s own Film Look Creator is a Studio feature, so it isn’t free on its own. spektrafilm OFX describes itself as a free OpenFX film simulation plugin for DaVinci Resolve, currently in beta. Color Lab has a free trial, but removing the watermark needs a license.

Does Color Lab work in DaVinci Resolve Free?

Yes. Color Lab works in DaVinci Resolve 20 or later, in both the free version and Studio, on Mac and Windows. Auto Balance is the one exception: it’s confirmed in Studio only.

Can Color Lab emulate specific film stocks?

No. Color Lab isn’t built around film stock profiles. Its looks are the Ypresets packs for iPhone and DJI footage, and its film-inspired effects are Film Grain, Halation, Bloom and Vignette.

Is Color Lab a subscription?

No. Color Lab is a one-time purchase with free plugin updates. Your license can be active on up to 2 computers at a time.

Do I need a Rec.709 conversion before Color Lab?

No. The looks are made to go straight onto your log clip. Adding a separate conversion LUT or Color Space Transform first will convert the image twice and make the grade look wrong.

Want to see if Color Lab fits your footage? Download the free trial for Mac or Windows. It’s the full plugin with a watermark, in DaVinci Resolve 20 or later, Free and Studio.
